St Basil Gold Coin for Vasilopita, the Greek New Year’s Cake.
Vasilopita is the beloved Greek New Year’s cake or bread , that is cut and shared on New Years Day to honour St. Basil and his charitable act towards the poor.
According to tradition, a coin was hidden within the baked goods, prepared by the women of the church and later returned to St Basil as part of his charitable exchange.
Today, families continue this custom by baking a coin into the Vasilopita. Whoever finds the coin once it is evenly cut, is believed to receive special blessings and good luck for the year ahead.
